Scholarship Applications (Research Scholarship and
Undergraduate Scholarship) are Now Open!
If you are in
touch with any students or potential candidates that may be

The Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the
Government of Japan offers scholarships to Canadian students who
wish to study at Japanese universities.
* The selection
process may be cancelled or applicants may be unable to travel
to Japan even after being selected for the MEXT Scholarship
Program due to measures taken in response to COVID-19.
Please be aware that interviews and tests for applicants within
the jurisdiction of Ontario/Toronto/GTA normally
take place at the Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto.
Normally, interviews must be conducted in-person at the
Consulate General of Japan’s offices. Due to COVID-19, the
process for the interviews will be announced at a later date.

The scholarship covers:
1. Full tuition
2. Monthly allowance
3. Round-trip flight between Japan and Canada

Notes:

Use the guide and
forms for the scholarship year for which you are applying.
They are subject to change each year.

For any questions on
the application documents, where you are allowed to answer
in Japanese, please also include an English translation.
·
Applications are only
accepted at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate General in the
country where the applicant has citizenship (i.e. Japanese
Embassy/Consulate's General in Canada can only accept
applications from Canadian citizens.). Send your completed
application to your nearest Embassy or
Consulate General of Japan.
Applications must be sent to the Japanese diplomatic mission
nearest you. For detailed information, please contact:

MEXT queries in-person or by phone.

Residents (in the jurisdiction of the Consulate-General of

Once your application has been sent, please inform our office
by email at information@to.mofa.go.jp
If you wish to
drop your application off in person on a deadline date, you
must confirm by sending a request to do so to information@to.mofa.go.jp
We recommend
that candidates mail in their completed application forms
using a reliable and traceable mail/delivery service.

Research Students

Application deadline (Completed applications must be received
by): Wednesday,
May 18, 2022.
Duration: 18-24 months, beginning
in April 2023/October 2023
In some cases, an extension may be possible if you proceed to a
further degree program.
Outline of eligibility:
Academic Background: Bachelor’s
degree or higher
Age: born on or after
April 2, 1988 (for the 2023 recruitment)
Study area: the same
field that the applicant has studied, or a related field
Nationality: Canadian
Departure date: April 2023/October 2023
Placement at University: Designated by MEXT, based
on your admission or a letter of provisional acceptance you
obtain from Japanese universities.
Selection process:
1. Application documents review
2. Examination (Japanese and English) and Interview: late
June-early-July (Exact Date and Time TBC at a later date)
Please note: If due to COVID-19, we are not able to run the
Examinations, the application process may be cancelled.
3. Results of the 1st screening notification : mid-July
4. Obtain admissions or letters of provisional acceptance
5. Acceptance notification : Following February-March

Undergraduate
Students
*The selection process
may be cancelled or applicants may be unable to travel to
Japan even after being selected for the MEXT Scholarship
Program due to measures taken in response to COVID-19.
Currently Open for Application: YES
Application deadline (Completed applications must be received
by): Thursday, June 2, 2022.
Duration: 5 years, beginning in April 2023
For those majoring in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine
or a six-year course in pharmacy, the term of the scholarship is
7 years. (The first year is language training.)
Outline of eligibility:
Academic Background: high
school diploma or higher
Age: born on or after
April 2, 1998 (for the 2023 recruitment)
Nationality: Canadian
Departure date: April 2023
Placement at University: Designated by MEXT, based
on your fields and subjects choices
Selection process:
1. Application documents review
2. Examination (Japanese, English, Mathematics and Science*) and
Interview: early-July-mid-July (Exact date TBC at a later date).
*Only for applicants who choose Natural Science field.
Please note: If due to COVID-19, we are not able to run the
Examinations, the application process may be cancelled.
3. Results of the 1st screening notification: mid- August
4. Acceptance notification :Following January-February
